There is a health centre between the port and Vila Baleira, on Rua Dr José Diamantino Lima. It is equipped with emergency service facilities, though in urgent cases most tourists wil probably transfer to the Cruz de Carvalho Hospital on Madeira, or to the mainland.
Medical insurance is strongly advised, though EU citizens who bring along their European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) are entitled to the same free health services as Madeiran citizens.
There’s a pharmacy (farmácia), recognisable by a green cross sign on Rua João Gonçalves Zarco.
