Rua João Gonçalves Zarco

Running inland, just east of Largo do Pelourinho, is Rua João Gonçalves Zarco, the island’s oldest street. This is where it all happens in Vila Baleira. Here you’ll find shops to stock up on supplies and for retail therapy, lunchrooms and cafés popular with residents, and local youth simply hanging out. Just past the end of the street, off Rua D. Estevão de Alencastre, you can see the 18th-century stone surround to St Joseph’s Fountain (moved here from a spot on Rua Zarco).
