Safety

Porto Santo has very little crime at all. Violence against tourists is pretty much non-existent, though the usual common-sense precautions should spare you any grief. Pickpockets and bag snatchers are not a problem, but it is still worth while being cautious about leaving valuables on the beach when you go for a swim.

If you are the victim of theft, you must report it to the police and get a copy of the report, if you want to make an insurance claim. The police station (tel +351 291 982 423) is northwest of the centre of Vila Baleira, on Rua José S. Moura Caldeira. If your passport is stolen or lost, you must contact your consulate on Madeira or in Lisbon to have a replacement issued.
