Nightlife and Entertainment

Although Porto Santo tends to be quiet in winter months, the nightlife scene really hots up in the summer, especially over weekends when a hip crowd crosses over from Funchal to laze on the beach during the day and revel the nights away. Beach Bars such as Tia Maria make great places to party under the stars. Clubs such as Challenger at the new dockside development of O Penedo do Sono have top-class DJs, and there’s good music at other bars in the complex, too. They’re all shoulder-to-shoulder along the waterside, making pub-hopping an easy option. In the centre of Vila Baleira, Taberna do Inferno, beside the church, attracts a thirty-something crowd, and has good music.

The modern Cultural & Congress Centre, just off Largo do Pelourinho, is the venue for local concerts and performances by visiting artists, and the cinema next door is the place to catch the best movies. Some of the larger hotels also stage evenings of folk dancing and music.
